This book tells an inspiring story of the author who was brought up in Communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s and follows her transition to the United Kingdom to start a new life of infinite possibilities. As a learner and teacher of English as a second language her experience of adapting to a new culture is shared by so many immigrants arriving in a bewildering new world.
This is a journey in the truest sense not only from one country to another filled with mind-blowing coincidences, and extraordinary discoveries but also from shedding the old assumptions she had about herself and becoming a whole new person in a whole new country.

I hate words like “inspirational” because they’ve become so overdone and cheesy, but I just have to say it – Beata is an inspiration. And yes, I know we present what we want the world to see, but I truly do think The Sickle And The Crown is genuine. A true story with glimpses from past Communist regimes just as we’ve seen in documentaries although with deep information and personal experiences (pictures inclusive). If you’re as interested as I am in understanding that where you are today doesn’t define your chances of where you’d be tomorrow (provided you believe you can make that climb), then this is book you need to read as it clearly illustrates (without living the fun bit out) that coincidences (which ideally we’d see as a negative) play a positive role in revealing the extent of our potentials.
